Об умении Полуянова впутываться в различные криминальные истории в журналистском сообществе ходили легенды, причем в них сквозила откровенная зависть. Дело в том, что ровно столько, сколько он в подобные приключения попадал, столько же из них и счастливо выныривал, да еще после этого, как правило, появлялась очередная забойная статья.
Вот и сейчас: едва Полуянов переступил порог купе режиссера… как тут же, несмотря на гудящую голову, чудовищный недосып и потрясение, которое он испытал при виде распростертого на постели окровавленного тела режиссера, в голову пришел броский заголовок будущей статьи.
Было четверть третьего утра. До прихода «Северного экспресса» на Ленинградский вокзал столицы оставалось более шести часов. До подписания очередного номера «Молодежных вестей» – еще четырнадцать. Что ни говори – целая куча времени.
За спиной Димы уже толпились взволнованные, потрясенные пассажиры «вагона повышенной комфортности», а откуда-то из коридора слышались всхлипы и причитания звезды будущего фильма – известной актрисы (и по совместительству любовницы режиссера) Ольги Волочковской…
Впрочем, следует, наверно, рассказать обо всем по порядку: почему журналист оказался в «Северном экспрессе» и с какой стати возвращался домой из Питера в составе киногруппы сериала «Невозможно оторваться».
Год назад режиссер Прокопенко обратился к Диме с просьбой продать киностудии, где он трудился, право на экранизацию документального романа, автором которого и был Дима.
Полуянов немедленно навел справки о кинорежиссере Вадиме Дмитриевиче Прокопенко. Пятидесятилетний мастер оказался известен и плодовит.
Правда, звезд с неба не хватал, зато в его фильмах охотно снимались самые знаменитые актеры, а сериалы его выпечки транслировали главные российские телеканалы.
Конечно, Полуянову и деньги были нужны, поэтому он уступил студии, от имени которой на него вышел Прокопенко, права на экранизацию. Отчаянно поторговавшись и получив, в итоге, шестизначную сумму в долларах, Дима возблагодарил Бога за нежданный подарок, подписал договор об уступке прав – и благополучно позабыл о кинопроекте.
Минул год – и вдруг на Димином горизонте вновь возник Прокопенко. Режиссер позвонил и сообщил, что сценарий по полуяновской книжке давно написан, подготовительный период уже закончен, и теперь он приступает к съемкам восьмисерийной ленты «Невозможно оторваться». Более того, он приглашает Диму самолично исполнить небольшую, но весьма эффектную роль в сериале, и для этого проследовать вместе с киногруппой в экспедицию в Питер. В Северной Пальмире и ее окрестностях планировалось снимать большую часть натуры.
Полуянов оказался столь неожиданным предложением ошарашен. Чуть не впервые в жизни потерял лицо и залепетал, что он-де, во-первых, совсем не артист, а, во-вторых, завален газетной работой. В ответ режиссер разразился горячим монологом: «Я только вас вижу в этой роли, Дмитрий! Это будет хит! Лучший дебют года! А какие условия для съемок! Питер! Белые ночи! Люкс в «Октябрьской»!
Журналист не смог устоять под прокопенковским напором – и в тот же вечер к нему на дом явился курьер с экземпляром сценария и договором на роль, который требовалось подписать немедленно.
Полуянов прочел сценарий и отдал должное неведомому ему труженику киноцеха по имени Дмитрий Ребров. Сценарист мастерски перевел документальную полуяновскую прозу на язык диалога и действия. Понравилась Диме и его собственная роль. Небольшая, естественно, но довольно эффектная.
Итак, оформив в газете отпуск за свой счет и нежно попрощавшись со своей гражданской женой Надеждой, Дима, исполненный надежд и вдохновения, отбыл в северную столицу…
…Теперь, когда северная натура была отснята, и Полуянов в процессе работы познакомился с Прокопенко ближе, он понял, что тот пригласил журналиста сниматься не потому, что вдруг поверил в его неизвестно откуда взявшийся) неземной актерский дар. Нет, Вадим Дмитриевич, конечно, втайне преследовал свои собственные цели. А именно: бурнокипящий режиссер полагал, что вряд ли Полуянов удержится от того, чтобы не рассказать о своем киноопыте на страницах родной газеты. Вот фильм и получит бесплатный пиар, причем уже на самой ранней стадии, когда съемки только-только начались.
Дима и впрямь собирался живописать свои приключения в роли актера, тем более, что рассказать было о чем. А вот взаимоотношения, царившие внутри съемочной группы, он намеревался оставить за кадром будущей статьи. А там бушевали страсти – хватало и любви, и ревности, и зависти, и ненависти… О многих сокровенных тайнах узнал в ходе экспедиции Дима. О чем-то ему рассказывали сами участники событий, что-то он подмечал сам…
Теперь же, когда произошло убийство главного человека – режиссера-постановщика, многое предстало в новом ракурсе, требовало анализа и переосмысления…
Прокопенко лежал, распростертый, на нижней полке, и его обнаженная грудь была залита кровью. Даже по одному виду Вадима Дмитриевича, по его восковому лицу становилось понятно, что медицинская помощь ему уже не нужна.
Дима отвернулся и наткнулся взглядом на проводницу – даму, отчаянно борющуюся со своими пятьюдесятью годами.
