Один из семи детей бедного фермера, Бернс со временем превратился в символ шотландской литературы, а его день рождения стал на родине национальным праздником.
Благодаря любимым советским фильмам все русскоговорящее население знает как минимум два стихотворения Бернса в переводе С. Маршака. В киноленте «Здравствуйте, я ваша тетя» Александр Калягин в обличье Донны Розы исполнил романс «Любовь и бедность», назвав его, правда, бразильской народной песней. А в «Служебном романе» Алиса Фрейндлих и Андрей Мягков спели «В моей душе покоя нет».
Поскольку тексты Бернса просты и ритмичны, его стихотворения перекладывают на музыку до сих пор. Так, в репертуаре молдавской группы Zdob Si Zdub фигурирует песня «Ты меня оставила» на слова Бернса, у фолк-группы «Мельница» – «Лорд Грегори» и «Горец», а Александр Градский посвятил стихам шотландца целый цикл композиций.
Роберт Бернс родился 25 января 1759 года в маленькой деревушке Аллоуэй в графстве Эйршир. Несмотря на крестьянское происхождение и бедность, он получил прекрасное образование, благодаря стараниям отца, пригласившего в дом хорошего учителя. С детства читал Библию, изучал английских Августианских поэтов (Поуп, Эдисон, Свифт, Стил) и наслаждался творчеством Шекспира.
В 1786 году вышла первая книга Бернса «Стихотворения преимущественно на шотландском диалекте» (Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish dialect), и поэт молниеносно приобрел известность по всей Шотландии. Половина тиража в 600 экземпляров разошлась по подписке, остальное раскупили за несколько недель. Тогда Бернс смог войти в аристократический литературный круг шотландской столицы.
Издаваемые Бернсом книги приносили некоторый доход, но вкладывал эти деньги он неудачно. В 1791 году у него появился стабильный источник дохода – поэт стал сборщиком акцизов в Дамфрисе, творческая деятельность теперь была возможна лишь в свободное от основной работы время.

В этом году день рождения Роберта Бернса в России начали отмечать заблаговременно. Третий фестиваль Burns Night стартовал в Екатеринбурге уже 22 января. Там прошел конкурс переводов стихотворений Роберта Бернса на русский язык и переводов стихов Владимира Высоцкого на английский язык «Бернс & Vysotsky: одна душа – два народа».
В Москву праздник пришел на следующий день. Вечером 23 января клуб «Гарцующий дредноут» на Старом Арбате превратился в кусочек Шотландии. Оказалось, что в столице немало поклонников Бернса, причем даже среди молодежи. Зал был заполнен, посадочных мест многим не хватало, но люди долго не расходились.
Вначале на небольшом экране был показан фильм о поэте, рассказывавший о его биографии и творческом пути. Позже вечер перерос в домашние посиделки с чтением стихотворений, песнями под гитару и волынку, танцами и, конечно, шотландским виски. White Heather Band – московские музыканты, исполняющие шотландскую музыку, практически не покидали сцену. А для желающих подвигаться московский клуб шотландских танцев Tartan Dreams провел мастер-классы по народным танцам. Сначала основной задачей новоявленных танцоров было отличить правую руку или ногу от левой. Впоследствии – не убиться и не покалечить соседа, потому что танцевать пришлось в тесноте.
Главным гостем фестиваля стал эдинбургский музыкант и певец Tommy Beavitt, порадовавший песнями на стихотворения Бернса как в оригинале, на шотландском, так и на английском и русском языках. У статного шотландца в килте и белой рубашке оказался прекрасный голос. Именно этому гостю была поручена ответственная миссия – вскрыть хаггис (традиционное шотландское блюдо, воспетое когда-то Бернсом). Перед дегустацией была торжественно прочитана «Ода хаггису» Роберта Бернса. Но когда Tommy Beavitt вонзил нож в блюдо, у него вырвалось лишь: «О, это русский хаггис». Видимо, шотландский гость ожидал от этой еды какого-то другого вида или «поведения», но какого именно – так и осталось загадкой. После «вскрытия» тарелка с хаггисом и крекерами пустилась по залу. Тому, кто собирается когда-нибудь пробовать хаггис, лучше не знать его рецепт. Остальным рассказываю: это нечто вроде горячего пудинга, запеченного или сваренного в бараньем желудке, делается из субпродуктов. Вид имеет сероватый и отталкивающий, но на вкус вполне ничего, напоминает паштет. Роберту Бернсу такой кулинарный шедевр явно нравился:

К концу праздника большая часть посетителей устало привалилась к стенкам, особо везучим удалось занять стулья. На танцполе остался всего один человек – маленькая девочка, замечательно исполнявшая свои придуманные танцы и не стеснявшаяся целого зала людей.
Поэтический вечер в «Гарцующем дредноуте» стал первым из трех столичных мероприятий, посвященных дню рождения Бернса. Так что тот, кто еще не успел съесть хаггис под шотландскую музыку, может сделать это 25 января в клубе «Билингва» или 30 января в пабе «Доктор Скотч».
