Он заперся в своем мире, в своей студии, редко кого допускал туда и сам редко выходил оттуда. Иногда все-таки выбирался в Ватикан — полюбоваться Рафаэлем, Микеланджело, античными скульптурами. Шли годы, а Иванов все никак не мог закончить картину — она стала частью его жизни, частью его существа. А вокруг все бурлило — в 1848 году Европу охватила волна революций, все только и говорили об этом. А потом в Рим приехал Герцен, и его мощный интеллект не мог не захватить художника. Иванов, чувствуя пробелы в своем историческом и философском образовании, попросил друзей прислать ему труды самых прогрессивных по тем временам ученых. Он размышлял о судьбах мира, о философских и религиозных учениях и постепенно словно перерастал того, кто задумывал и воплощал на холсте «Явление…». «Мои труды — большая картина — более и более понижаются в моих глазах. Далеко ушли мы, живущие в 1855 году, в мышлениях наших тем, что перед последними решениями учености литературной основная мысль моей картины почти совсем теряется, и, таким образом, у меня едва достигает духу, чтобы более совершенствовать ее исполнение… Вы, может, спросите меня, что ж я извлек из последних положений литературной учености? Тут я едва могу назваться слабым учеником, хотя и сделал несколько проб, как ее приспособить к нашему живописному делу». Иванов говорил о серии акварельных набросков фресок, которые он задумал для «Храма человечества», посвященного истории всех религий, храма примирения всех верующих, храма любви, веры, надежды, который он надеялся создать в России. Понятное дело, это было несбыточной мечтой — ну, кто позволил бы ему в ортодоксальной православной России построить такой храм? Но остались акварели, и это поистине гениальные работы, далеко опередившие свое время, словно написанные нашим современником — стремительные, легкие, летящие, изящные, светящиеся каким-то внутренним светом. Это уже совсем другой Иванов — великий живописец и великий мыслитель, сравнимый с гениями Возрождения. Недаром Чернышевский писал, что Иванов «принадлежал по своим стремлениям к небольшому числу избранных гениев, которые решительно становятся людьми будущего». Но все это станет понятно гораздо позже…
В 1857 году художник, наконец, открыл двери мастерской и позволил посетителям увидеть свое детище. Первой стала вдовствующая императрица Александра Федоровна, оказавшаяся тогда в Риме. Картина произвела на нее сильное впечатление. А потом и весь Рим потянулся в мастерскую этого странного русского. Некоторые просиживали перед картиной часами. Успех был невероятный. Иванову предложили привезти картину в Париж, но он вдруг заспешил на родину — ведь именно для России он создавал свое творение. В феврале 1858 года картину зашла посмотреть великая княгиня Елена Павловна. Потрясенная увиденным, она обещала оплатить все издержки по доставке полотна в Петербург.
И вот после сложнейшего путешествия Иванов приехал вместе со своим «Явлением…» в Россию. Он был полон планов — собирался создать художественную школу, поддерживать молодых художников, развивать свои новые идеи. Мечтал все-таки совершить путешествие в Палестину, которое пока так и не случилось в его жизни, а потом поселиться в Москве и построить там «Храм человечества». Но на родине его ждало страшное разочарование. Его главная картина, «Явление Христа народу», русским народом понята не была! 28 мая 1858 года ее показали императору и членам императорской семьи. И хотя царь пожал художнику руку и расспрашивал о картине, вскоре стало ясно, что она не восхитила двор, как совсем недавно «Гибель Помпеи» Брюллова. Затем полотно перевезли в зал Академии художеств и открыли для публики. Но и здесь картину приняли довольно прохладно, а некоторые критики и вовсе разразились ругательными рецензиями. Писали, что автор не оправдал возложенных на него надежд и ожиданий, что он изобразил на своей картине каких-то евреев, что ни композиционное, ни изобразительное решение не отвечает требованиям исторического жанра. Тогдашнему обществу, представителям академических кругов оказалось не под силу оценить новаторство этой живописи и композиции, глубину идей, ее породивших, зато молодые российские художники почувствовали нерв, свежесть, жизнь, философское наполнение творения Иванова. Им восторгались Иван Крамской, молодой профессор Академии Чистяков, а славянофил Хомяков писал: «Видеть картину Иванова не только наслаждение, но гораздо большее — это событие жизни». К сожалению, таких восторженных голосов было совсем немного.
Иванов страшно разочаровался тем, как встретила родина его детище. Он ждал от царя хорошего вознаграждения, но по Петербургу поползли слухи, что художнику заплатят всего 10 или даже 8 тысяч рублей — вместо обещанных 30! После очередной поездки ко двору, когда его снова не соизволили принять, он, безмерно оскорбленный, слег. Говорили, заболел холерой. А спустя три дня, 3 июля 1858 года, Александр Иванов, великий русский художник, скончался. По иронии судьбы, через несколько часов после его смерти придворная канцелярия прислала к нему посыльного — царь уведомлял Иванова, что жалует его орденом Святого Владимира и 15 тысячами рублей за его картину. В газетах появились некрологи. В одном из них (скорее всего, написанном В. Боткиным) говорилось: «Кто ценит и гордится замечательными людьми нашего отечества, тот поймет всю важность этой потери… Он был твердый боец и вышел из боя победителем. …Кроме своих художественных достоинств он имел нежную душу и по-детски простодушное сердце».
Сегодня «Явление…» хранится вместе с множеством этюдов, набросков и рисунков в Третьяковской галерее — картине отдан отдельный зал. О ней и ее создателе написано множество книг и статей. С годами стало ясно, что это полотно — одно из главных в истории русского искусства и вообще в истории русской культуры. Все очевиднее становится поразительное художественное мастерство Александра Иванова и его способность задавать людям самые главные вопросы. Какова роль отдельного человека в жизни общества? Способны ли люди внимать своим пророкам? Способны ли прислушаться к их предупреждениям? Или лучшие и мудрейшие из нас всегда обречены на то, чтоб под улюлюканье и крики толпы «Распни его! Распни его!» быть распятыми?
