И действительно — двадцать лет (с перерывами) работы, огромные размеры ( 5.4 х 7.5 метра), несколько сотен набросков, эскизов, этюдов, многие из которых имеют самостоятельную художественную ценность. И полное неприятие современников картины, ныне признанной одним из самых ярких достижений русского искусства…
«Иванов — целая загадка. С одной стороны, кто из русских его не знает? И с другой — никто из русских людей его не знает», — писал в начале прошлого столетия Сергей Дягилев. Этот художник — яркий, самобытный, стоит особняком в ряду российских живописцев. Многие считают его самым выдающимся художником XIX века — ведь ему удалось опередить свое время и определить пути развития русского искусства…
Александр Иванов не имел аристократических корней — его отец Андрей Иванов не знал своих родителей, он вырос в московском Воспитательном доме. Когда там обратили внимание на его способности к рисованию, мальчика — среди 28 сирот — определили учиться в Академию художеств. Вот такое случалось порой в царской России. И трудолюбивый юноша достиг больших успехов — стал впоследствии профессором Академии! Женился он на Екатерине Ивановне Демерт, дочери мастера позументного цеха, обрусевшего немца, и 16 июля 1806 года у них родился сын Александр. В семье много говорили об искусстве, в доме всегда бывали ученики и коллеги-художники профессора Иванова, и не удивительно, что младший Иванов начал рисовать еще совсем в раннем возрасте. Поняв, что у сына талант к живописи, отец решил отдать его на учебу в Академию, и в одиннадцать лет Саша становится вольноприходящим учеником — сначала в классе отца, а потом профессора А.Е. Егорова. Он демонстрировал такие способности, что многие просто не верили в авторство его работ — наверняка, говорили, тут приложил руку отец! Конечно, отец всегда был самым большим авторитетом для Александра, но все его работы были сделаны абсолютно самостоятельно.
За успехи в рисовании юноша получил две серебряные медали, в 1824 году, за картину «Приам, испрашивающий у Ахиллеса тело Гектора» — малую золотую, а в 1828 году — большую золотую медаль за полотно «Иосиф, толкующий сны заключенных с ним в темницу виночерпию и хлебодару».
Летом 1830 года Иванов отправляется на четыре года в Рим как пенсионер Общества поощрения художников — «для усовершенствования в исторической живописи». По строгим правилам Общества, в первый год пенсионер должен «осуществить осмотр достопримечательностей» (архитектурных и живописных), во второй год — «исполнить картон в натуральную величину с картины Микель Анджело, что в капелле Сиксовой в Ватикане, изображающей Сотворение человека», а в третий — заниматься уже «произведением картины собственного сочинения». Уезжая из России, двадцатичетырехлетний Александр и не думал, что вернется на родину через 28 лет, и многих родных и близких людей больше не увидит…
Сын питомца Воспитательного дома и профессора петербургской Академии художеств едет через Вену в Милан, а затем в Рим, Вечный город, столицу тогдашней мировой художественной жизни, куда устремлялись молодые художники со всего мира — приобщиться к античности и постигать творения мастеров Возрождения. И наконец — великая фреска Микеланджело, встреча с великим бунтарем, с его философскими и художественными идеями, с его искусством…
Что же станет темой его собственной картины, размышлял молодой художник. Он тоже должен выбрать такой сюжет, который заставит людей думать и сопереживать, сюжет, который никого не оставит равнодушным. И глубоко верующий Иванов вдруг понимает: самый главный момент в истории человечества — это встреча с Богочеловеком, первая встреча с Христом, когда еще мало кто из людей осознает, какое трагическое и прекрасное будущее ждет Его…
А в кафе Греко, где по вечерам собиралась вся римская богема, шли жаркие споры о работах старых мастеров, о путях развития искусства, о политике, о роли Церкви и религии — здесь, в цитадели католицизма, рядом с Ватиканом, произносились порой весьма крамольные речи. Все это не могло не повлиять на мировоззрение молодого русского художника. Первым его ответом на собственные вопросы и вопросы времени стало небольшое полотно «Явление Христа Марии Магдалине после Воскресения» (1835). Эта картина, написанная за год, была отправлена в Россию, имела там большой успех — за нее Иванову присвоили звание академика Академии художеств. Тщательно проштудировав Евангелия и философско-религиозные труды, он создал выразительнейшую и глубоко драматичную двухфигурную композицию. Иванов выбрал момент, когда Христос останавливает порыв Марии, узнавшей Его и устремившейся к Нему. Христос словно говорит: «Погоди, не прикасайся ко мне!» Художнику блестяще удалось передать эмоциональное напряжение этой сцены. В письме к отцу Иванов писал, что сам чрезвычайно доволен тем, как у него получились и порыв Марии, и жест Христа. Очень трудно было добиться нужного выражения лица у натурщицы, этой сложной смеси горя и вновь обретенной надежды. И тогда он придумал оригинальный способ: попросил девушку, позировавшую ему, держать в руках лук, а когда у нее начинали течь слезы, рассказывал ей что-нибудь смешное, заставляя ее смеяться.
В начале 1836 года картина была выставлена в Капитолии, среди полотен самых разных художников, работавших тогда в Риме. Имя Иванова стразу стало известным — очень уж его работа выделялась на общем, надо сказать, далеко не слабом фоне.
В это же время у Иванова родился замысел его главной картины — «Явления Христа народу». Одновременно с «Явлением Христа Марии Магдалине» Иванов отправил в Петербург в Общество поощрения художников и кальку с последнего эскиза новой работы. Начался главный этап его творческой жизни — создание картины, ставшей, наверное, главной для всего русского искусства XIX века.
Двадцать лет жизни, двадцать лет непрерывного труда, отшельничества, жертвования во имя искусства и воплощения своих философских и художественных идей… Это был настоящий подвиг!
Итак, явление Христа народу во время крещения в Иордане. Сюжет, выбранный Ивановым, — один из важнейших в христианстве, это момент встречи Ветхого и Нового заветов, начало новой истории. Иоанн Предтеча, крестящий иудеев в водах Иордана, вдруг видит Того, во имя которого он совершает крещение. Это и момент пророчества явления, и момент самого явления. Бледное, выразительное лицо Иоанна, вся его фигура, в которой — потрясение близостью Мессии, великолепно написаны художником. Иоанн говорит людям: вот Он, Тот, что идет за мной, Тот, кто примет жертву за вас. И мы видим — на отдалении от всей этой живописной группы идет Иисус. Он несет людям Добро и Любовь, свет истины и милосердие. К людям идет Тот, кому суждено взять на себя все грехи человеческие и умереть на кресте. Некоторая неясность в очертаниях фигуры Христа говорит о его непостижимости простым человеком. Идет Христос по направлению к фарисеям, грешникам, словно вынося им приговор — «Я пришел не праведников, но грешников призвать к покаянию». (Евангелие.)

Одни — с надеждой и верой, с готовностью идти за Учителем и стать мучеником во имя великой Идеи, другие — скептически, словно говоря — мы еще посмотрим, что из всего этого выйдет, а третьи — уже просто с презрением и злобой, они не способны принять ничего нового, как фарисеи и седуккеи. Каждый персонаж картины — старики и юнцы, рабы и господа, богатые и нищие, колеблющиеся и безучастные, добрые и злые — написан так, что зритель словно слышит биение их сердец. Иванов действительно был настоящим мастером, и его герои на полотне — по-настоящему живые. Недаром он разыскивал по всей Италии натурщиков, способных превратиться в жителей древней Иудеи, — в синагогах и церквях, в еврейских кварталах, на рынках и улицах, и рисовал, рисовал бесчисленные этюды, ища нужный ракурс, нужное выражение лица, нужный поворот.
Особое значение Иванов придавал пейзажу, и хотя Общество поощрения художников не выделило ему деньги на поездку в Палестину, он использовал для картины итальянские ландшафты, жил месяцами среди Понтийских болот и в разных итальянских захолустьях, стараясь воссоздать на полотне природу Святой Земли. Он никогда не считал себя пейзажистом, но с увлечением писал этюды — горы в Неаполе, «реку чистейшей и быстро текущей воды» (А. Иванов) в Субиако, старую Аппиевую дорогу в Риме, предвосхищая в своих работах открытия импрессионистов.
В те годы в Риме жил Николай Васильевич Гоголь. Эти двое русских — их однажды познакомил другой замечательный русский человек, поэт Жуковский — стали близкими друзьями. Гоголь писал «Мертвые души», Иванов создавал свое «Явление…», и каждый надеялся, что его творение пробудит совесть народа, сделает его чище, благороднее, возвышеннее… (Кстати, в некоторых персонажах картины можно увидеть черты писателя.)
В декабре 1838 года в Рим, в сопровождении Жуковского, прибыл цесаревич Александр Николаевич. Он с огромным интересом знакомился с Вечным городом, его музеями и храмами, встречался с представителями многочисленной русской колонии и однажды, по предложению Жуковского, побывавшего как-то в гостях у Иванова и потрясенного его «Явлением…», посетил мастерскую уже довольно известного в России художника. Наследнику картина (еще не законченная, конечно) очень понравилась, и он пожаловал Иванову денежное вспомоществование на три года — дабы тот закончил свое грандиозное полотно. Это оказалось очень кстати, ведь Общество поощрения художников официально объявило Иванову о том, что оно закончило финансировать его пребывание в Риме.
Гоголь был счастлив за друга и считал, что в этом успехе есть и доля его заслуги!
А однажды он буквально затащил своего приятеля-затворника в дом Апраксиных, семейства, близкого ко двору, богатого и весьма влиятельного. Апраксины, мать и две дочери, прибыли в Италию в 1848 году. В Риме им понравилось, и они решили постоянно проводить тут зимы. Иванов, обычно чрезвычайно сдержанный, неразговорчивый, почувствовал себя в этом гостеприимном доме настолько хорошо и свободно, что даже делился своими размышлениями, планами, и оказался весьма мил в общении. А потом он влюбился — отчаянно, как мальчишка, в младшую из сестер Апраксиных, в графиню Марию Владимировну. Очаровательная, образованная, владеющая несколькими европейскими языками, любительница музыки и живописи, она тоже увлеклась художником. «Молодая дама, знатная происхождением, соотечественница, прелестная, добрая душа, полюбила меня горячо, простила мне недостатки и уверила меня в постоянстве. Если я не отвечу на все это святостью моей жизни, без сомнения, буду подлец из подлецов», — писал он одному из своих друзей. Наивный и чистый человек, Иванов совсем забыл о разнице в общественном положении — своем и своей Машеньки, забыл о том, что она богата, а он, по сути, нищий. Гоголь, которому он признался в своих чувствах, предупреждал — эта девушка не для него, но Иванов не хотел ничего слушать и даже поссорился с писателем. Однако все случилось так, как предсказывал мудрый Николай Васильевич — Машу выдали замуж за высокородного князя Мещерского.
Для Иванова это была настоящая трагедия. Рушились все его надежды на личное счастье, мечты о семье, с милой женой и детишками, оказались иллюзией. «Вне студии я довольно несчастлив, и если б не студия, давно бы был убит», — признавался он другу.
