Я стою во дворике филфака СпбГУ. Проверяю на прочность два священных слова: филфак и университет. Конечно, стоит ещё пройтись по знаменитому коридору, где висят портреты великих лингвистов и русистов. Но что-то мне подсказывает, что академический дух переместился в воздух. Может быть, вон там, на скамеечке, сидит будущая нобелевская лауреатка? Её лицо, склонённое над томиком стихов Гёте, выдаёт затаённую страсть. Кого больше? Конечно, девушек. Они проходят мимо хохочущими стайками. Все разные, никакой кастовости, никакой истовой убеждённости на лицах, только одеты более затейливо и не так крикливо, как это делают их коллеги с журфака. И броши. Такой зрелый аксессуар непременно мелькнёт то на чёрной водолазке, то на белой блузе. А мысли какие?

Но теперь понятно, что для занятий филологией необходим особый склад ума, которого у меня нет. Филолог-учёный должен помнить очень много фактов, причём не приблизительно: «Я, кажется, о чём-то подобном когда-то читал», – а дословно. Есть много соседних с филологией наук, где я вижу себя: культурная антропология, социолингвистика, фольклористика...»
Дарья Кунцевич, 23 года, филолог, студент-магистр: «В прошлом году я закончила бакалавриат, появилось два варианта: продолжить обучение и пойти в магистратуру или начать работать. Достойной работы по специальности не было, а в магистратуре предложили получить двойной диплом с французским университетом в Бордо. Было бы глупо отказываться от такой возможности, поэтому первый семестр этого года я провела в Бордо.
За несколько месяцев до выпуска, когда я не знала, что меня ожидает, я чувствовала себя бесполезной. Одноклассники, которые учились на стоматологов и строителей, могли применить свои способности, я же после четырёх лет обучения могла похвастаться лишь умением читать и разумно (с переменным успехом) мыслить, я уж точно не единственная в мире с такими «сверхспособностями». Поступление в магистратуру отодвинуло ещё на два года мою неуверенность и самобичевание».

«Я бы весь корпус студентов разделил, наверное, на три группы, – говорит литератор и доцент кафедры зарубежной литературы СпбГУ Андрей Аствацатуров. – Есть основная группа, которая идёт туда, потому что их родители отправили. И потому что, наверное, к техническим наукам нет способностей. Это некоторая часть аудитории. Другая часть идёт, чтобы выучить иностранный язык и работать потом где-нибудь секретарём-референтом или переводчиком, или гидом-экскурсоводом. И какая-то незначительная часть идёт туда с изначальным интересом заниматься наукой. Но это очень незначительная часть. На самом деле в бизнесе или в менеджменте не так уж и требуется специальное экономическое образование. Там может и классический филолог работать, если он умеет думать и принимать решения. Поэтому не надо подходить к образованию строго прямолинейно – раз человек этим занимается, он и работать должен по этой специальности. Не надо думать, что образование должно подготовить человека к жизни в большом мире. Частично да, но это только одна из его целей. Цель образования – развить всестороннюю личность. Чтобы человек чувствовал себя счастливым, образованным, свободным».
Получается, что вопрос стоит ставить несколько иначе: где всесторонне развитая личность может себя проявить?
